Recycling Instructions: Curbside And Town Drop-Off Centers
|
|
|
MAGAZINES (Bundled Separately)
Examples: Magazines and any glossy mail order catalogues.
Preparation: Bundle and tie separately. Haulers will collect these items during the first seven calendar days of each month. Local drop-off centers will accept these items at any time.
Items NOT Accepted: Phone books (see Phone Books [anchor] for drop-off location information), Junk mail, Books

NEWSPAPER (Bundled Separately)
Examples: Newspaper and any inserts delivered with the newspapers.
Preparation: Tie newspaper in bundles. Brown paper bags may be used where residential recycling bins are used. DO NOT PUT IN BLUE BAGS OR PLASTIC BAGS.
Items NOT Accepted: Phone books (see Phone Books [anchor] for drop-off location information), Junk mail, Books. |

CORRUGATED CARDBOARD (Bundled Separately)
Examples: Double-walled Cardboard and Shipping cartons.
Preparation: Cardboard must be clean. Empty the carton, flatten and tie in bundles not larger than 3 feet by 3 feet.
Items NOT Accepted: Waxed cardboard, Shoe boxes, Pizza boxes, Gift boxes, Cereal boxes. |

PLASTIC BOTTLES or 
Examples: Clear and Colored plastic bottles. Soda (up to 3 liter), Milk and Water jugs (up to 1 gallon only), Detergent, Bleach and Personal Care Products.
Preparation: Discard caps. Empty and Rinse.
THE BOTTLE MUST HAVE EITHER RECYLING SYMBOL NUMBER or 
Items NOT Accepted: Bottles larger than 1 gallon, Car Oil Bottles, Food Wrap, Grocery Bags, Plastic toys, Pool Chemical Bottles, Tubs, Buckets or Pails, Recycling Symbols thru . |

GLASS FOOD & BEVERAGE CONTAINERS
Examples: Food and Beverage Bottles and Jars - Clear, Brown, and Green
Preparation: Empty and Rinse. Lids need to be removed but labels can be left on. NO BROKEN GLASS.
Items NOT Accepted: Drinking Glass, Pyrex, Light Bulbs, Ceramics, Window Glass, Mirror glass. |

METAL FOOD & BEVERAGE CONTAINERS
Examples: Soup, Pet Food, Soda, Beer, Pie Plates
Preparation: Empty and Rinse. Do not flatten. Lids and labels can be left on.
Items NOT Accepted: Scrap Metal such as Toasters, Pots, Frying Pans, Coat Hangers - take these to your local drop off center. |

GRASS CLIPPINGS
Connecticut does not allow state solid waste disposal facilities to accept grass clippings. O not put this material at your curb for collection. Leave your grass clippings on the lawn where they fall or compost the material. Questions? Call HRRA at the number below. |

Items Accepted At Drop-Off Centers Only
Each municipality has a location for resident drop-off of the following items. Please call the appropriate number below for the drop-off center location.

VEHICLE BATTERIES
Examples: Car Batteries, Truck Batteries, Boat Batteries, Tractor Batteries, Motorcycle Batteries
Preparation: Deliver to drop-off center.
Items NOT Accepted: Common Household Batteries (Flashlights, Toys, Small Electronics) can be placed in the trash. See below for Nickel-Cadmium Batteries (rechargeables.) Many button-cell batteries found in Watches, Hearing Aids, Camera, Calculators, Pagers, etc., can be brought to HHW collection day (see special instructions below.)

SCRAP METAL
Examples: Light Scrap Metal, White Goods, Aluminum, Copper and Brass, including items such as Tools, Water Tanks, Pipes and Ducting, Appliances and Water Heaters, Lawn Chairs, Aluminum Siding, Storm Doors, Copper Pipe and Wire, Faucets, Toasters, Pots, Frying Pans, Coat Hangers
Preparation: Check with your local drop off center (call your town at number listed below.)
Items NOT Accepted: Propane Tanks, Oil-Based Paint Cans, Fuel Oil and Gasoline Tanks (see special disposal instructions for HHW below) |

WASTE MOTOR OIL
Preparation: Place in clean plastic or metal jug. Do not use empty bleach containers
Items NOT Accepted: Gasoline, Automatic Transmission Fluid, Fuel Oil, Hydraulic Oil, Parts Cleaner Solvents, Anti-Freeze. These are household hazardous wastes (HHW), see special disposal instructions below. |

LEAVES
Preparation: Check with your local drop-off center.
Items NOT Accepted: Grass Clippings (leave on your lawn), Brush. Brush may be accepted separately at some drop-off centers (call your town at number listed below.)

NICKEL-CADMIUM (Ni-Cd) BATTERIES
Examples: Rechargeables commonly used in Cordless Power Tools and Telephones, Cellular Phones, Notebook Computers, Camcorders, Walkie-Talkies, Hand Held Vacuums, Remote Control Cars, etc. and easily identified with the symbol at left printed right on the battery. CALL 1-800-8BATTERY to RECYCLE Nickel-Cadmium (Ni-Cd) Batteries. |

OTHER ITEMS
Your town has a location for resident drop-off of curbside recyclables as well as many other items which may include Office paper, Junk Mail, Tires, Furniture, Old Clothing, etc. To get specific information call your town at the number listed below. |

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE (HHW)
A One-day HHW collection event is held for residents each year. Look for ads in newspapers and notices in town halls between September 1 and November 30 each year. Call HRRA at the number listed below for more information.
Examples: Oil-based Paints, Waste Fuels, Stains, Thinners, Strippers, Varnishes, Glues, Polishes, Hazardous Cleaners, Pesticides, Herbicides, Auto Fluids (other than Waste Motor Oil - see above), Solvents, Degreasers, etc.
Items NOT Accepted: Latex Paints, Medical Wastes, Ammunition, Fireworks or Explosives, etc. |
