Overview

The Public Works Department is responsible for the upkeep of the infrastructure of the town. It is the organization responsible for the snow plowing and removal in the winter, road and street repair and new sidewalk construction in the summer. This office also maintains and oversees the water and sewer systems for the residents and businesses located within the town's borders. It also oversees all building maintenance for the municipal structures. It works with the State and Federal Governments to coordinate and implement the major bridge replacement projects around town. It oversees the engineering aspects of all new construction within the town and ensures that these projects conform to local and state regulations. The Public Works Office is located in the north wing of the Clifford J. Hurgin Municipal Center on the second floor next to the Health Department and across from Planning and Zoning and the Building Departments.

The Town Engineer provides the following for the Town of Bethel:

  • Professional engineering services for the Town Departments, agencies and boards.
  • In-house design of Capital Improvement Projects and inspection of construction for conformance to plans
  • Review design of development plans for subdivision and commercial developments
  • Evaluates and coordinates services provided by consulting engineers
  • Provides construction administrative services and engineering advice on major Town funded projects

The Engineering Division is also responsible for the inspection and maintenance of the Town's bridges and dams. The Division is developing a bridge program for the design and replacement of the bridges that are in poor condition. ...

The Highway Department is located off of Route 53 on Sympaug Park Road. Their office hours are from 7:00 am – 3:30 pm, Monday – Friday. This office is responsible for the road maintenance and snow removal around the town. This department also determines the Leaf Pick-up Schedule during the late fall and early winter months. ...

The Transfer Station is located off Route 53 on Sympaug Park Road (1 Sympaug Park Road - Behind the Highway Department) The office hours are as follows: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7:00 am – 3:00 pm - Lunch time closed Approximately 12:00 noon - 12:45 pm.
The Transfer Station is open only to Bethel Residents and valid permit is required to use this facility. Annual permit is $30.00/year/car.

Tree Warden – Bethel's acting Tree Warden is Rolf Brandt. He is responsible for ensuring the health and beauty of all the trees located in the Town right-of-ways. Trees located on private property are the responsibility of the individual homeowner. Utility Department includes the Town of Bethel Water and Sewer Departments.

Water Department - This department is responsible for the maintenance of the Municipal Drinking Water systems. The staff conducts monthly and yearly testing of the well and water supply to ensure that it is in compliance with both state and federal guidelines. The Maple Avenue Wells supply 70% of the Town's drinking water and the remaining 30% is pulled from the Chestnut Ridge Reservoir. ...

Sewer Department – This department maintains the Municipal sewer mains located within the Town to ensure compliance with both state and federal regulations. The Town of Bethel does not have its own sewage treatment plant and is currently operating under an Interlocal Agreement with the City of Danbury to send its municipal sewage to their treatment facility. The daily capacity allowance as per the Interlocal agreement is 2,000,000 gallons per day. ...
